Grimsley Whirlies Swim Team at the Regional Championships

The past two days the Grimsley Whirlie swim team has competed in the North Carolina High School Swimming and Diving Regional Championships.  The event was held at the new, state of the art Greensboro Aquatics Center.  A total of 22 different high school teams from around the area traveled to Greensboro to participate in the highly competitive event.  Grimsley, historically has always had a strong swim team.  They have won a total of six state championships in swimming including one two years ago in 2013.  They again proved to have a strong team this year as the Grimsley girls finished the meet in second place, and the boys wound up in fifth place.  These results were quite impressive considering the fact that there are only four seniors on the entire team.  On the boys side, it was actually a freshman, by the name of Graham Hertwick who accumulated the most points.  He qualified to compete in the state championship meet after finishing 8th in the 100 yard butterfly, and 6th in the 100 yard freestyle.  Graham also led his medley relay team to a fifth place finish.  After finishing all of his swims Graham summed it all up by saying “It was a good night at the pool.”  On the girls side there were several who qualified for the state championships.  Amelia Gilchrist, and Alexandra Kreager led the team in scoring.  Amelia finished 2nd in the 200 yard freestyle, and 4th in the 100 yard backstroke.  Alexandra, who recently signed to swim with East Carolina University, finished 4th in both the 200 yard individual medley, and the 500 yard freestyle.  Also, senior leaders Caitlyn Cockroft, and Sarah Newell both placed high in the meet.  Together, these four girls teamed up to win both the 200 yard medley relay, and the 200 yard freestyle relay.  After wining the relays they will have a shot to try and win both events at the state championships in Raleigh, North Carolina next weekend.
